Sorting Skittles with Simon – What colour are you?

fruit-skittles-looseA NEW FRIEND RECENTLY joined the CU just after Christmas. His name is Simon and he’s from Germany. At CU bowling the other week I happened to buy a bag of Skittles and he loved them!

Since then every time we – my friend Lauren and I –  have seen Simon at CU, Bowling or Ember we’ve had to have a bag of skittles to top off the evening.

Last night at the Ember Lounge (Staffs bar) we hung out with the CU crew again and whilst sharing Skittles came across the dilemma of choosing the best flavour. Whilst we all agreed that red ones are icky and purple’s rock we decided to order the middle three, green, yellows and oranges.

So what’s your favourite colour?

It seems that there is a German way of deciding which ones are best and it involves all five skittle colours and one pint of Guinness. A short while later and a good few sips of Guinness Simon ranked the Skittles as follows: Purple, Yellow, Orange, Green, Red. Lauren and I were unsure whether this is actually which flavour’s best or which ones go best with Guinness.

I know after i’ve posted this that a lot of people will be wanting to rearrange the colours in their own preference order, we all have different taste preferences, just like we all have people preferences. The beauty of Skittles and people is that there is always a flavour that we like….

Some people we get on with so well that we never want to stop hanging out with them, chatting with them and just being around them – perhaps in this case we’ll call them our purple skittle people - just like we have people that we find it really difficult to get on with - red skittles - and a myriad of different personalities in between – orange, yellow, green.

Yet somehow all of these different flavours mix together into an awesome bag of sweets! I guess when you look at the church you can see these flavours in action. There is in every congregation:

Purple!the purple skittle

The one person that you just can’t go through a service without saying hello to, one of your encouragers, someone you rely on.

Yellowthe yellow skittle

The understated amazing person that you’d miss badly if ever they left! This sunny guy is always happy and you can always expect a hug!

Orange Skittlethe orange skittle

The middle of the road take it or leave it colour, someone that always seems to be around and perhaps you should pay a little more attention to because they have more to offer.

green skittlethe green skittle

The unintentionally annoying person! Difficult to deal with at times, a real patience builder.

red skittlesthe red skittle

Someone it’s easier to avoid than talk to. Someone you talk to very little, if at all.

(rearrange the colours to your preference.)

I guess what I’m trying to say… and not getting round to it that quickly is this : In life – in church and out - there are all kinds of people, people to support us, challenge us, ridicule us, mock us, love us, help us, but they are all equally a part of the world, they all belong in the bag! Sometimes we have to deal with our least favourite flavours to learn more about ourselves.

Taste the Rainbow!

  1. This was an interesting post, shall have to think up some topics for my blog next week (blogging nine days in a row bled me dry).

To confuse the Skittle metaphor some more, sometimes you think you’ve met a purple Skittle and they turn out to be a red* – opinionated people who like to party can sometimes end up just being obnoxious Skittles with drug problems. Guess what I’m trying to say is appreciate the more subtle Skittle flavours.

I’m beginning to realise that there are a lot of oranges in my life, people who I should “pay a little more attention to because they have more to offer.”

*I always remember red Skittles tasting good, shall buy myself a bag and then vote on your poll.

  2. I love the fact that you have taken one of our random Ember conversations and turned it into a blog post which reflects the world! Personally I have to agree with Simons evaluations (although my decision was made with out the aid of Guiness!)

I agree that there is every type of skittle in my life, purple through to red they are all there.

Thanks for being such an awesome purple skittle!
    x

  3. I had a skittles Shakeaway today… Skittles blended with milk and Ice-cream .. it reminded me of this post and I guess said to me that even the worst people you could imagine hanging out with, blitz them with others and add ice-cream and you’ve got a winning combo lol xxx
